Introduction

This unit was developed as part of the summer course requirements for Educational Studies #635, "Using the Internet for Curriculum Application".

Children are alway amused by pigs!  This unit will focus on this subject!  We have formulated many resources from the internet and books, to help with this 3-5 day unit.

Content Area and Grade Level

This unit can be adapted for use in K-2 classrooms and targets the areas of Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Technology.

Curriculum Standards

Our unit's main objective is for the students to be aware of the different characteristics of the pig and show how they contribute to our world.  The culminating project will be a recreation of the story "The Three Little Pigs".  Also, the children will be creating their own pig characters.  The main focus of this project will address Delaware's State Standards for Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math and Technology.

• Students will use written and oral English appropriate for various purposes and audiences.
• Students will construct, examine, and extend the meaning of literary, informative an technical texts through listening, reading and viewing.
• Students will access, organized, and evaluate information gained by listening, reading, and Students will use written and oral English appropriate for various purposes and viewing.
• Students will develop number sense by solving problems in which there is a need to represent and model real number verbally, physically, and symbolically; to use operations with understanding; to explain the relationships between numbers; to apply the concept of a unit; and determine the relative magnitude of real numbers.
• Students will develop an understanding of patterns; and to analyze, represent, model and describe real-world functional relationships.
• Students will be able to observe a variety of living organisms(plants ande animals) and identify basic needs common to the organisms such as food, water air, shelter, etc.
• Students will develop and empoly the civic skills necessary for effective, participatory citizenship.

Entry Level Skill and Knowledge

Students prior knowledge might add interest, however, it is not necessary.  Some basic knowledge about the keyboard on the computer.

Classroom Management

Most of the activities will be done by the whole group approach.  However, when the students work on the computers (2), they will work as a center activity. Whereas, there will be four students on the computers with an adult paraprofessional.

Evaluation

The students will be evaluated on the following:

• Group participation and the level of cooperation
• Group discussion
• Completion of all tasks
